Description

J.P. Howard, Hotelkeeper, Boulia, Queensland, issued at Winton, uniface one pound, currency note, dated December 19, 1929 (see below) (190- printed), numbered A499, signed Jonah Howard per TF', watermarked 'SAUNDERS', value as 'Ã…â€Å‣ ONE' in upper left and lower right corners, imprint 'T.Willmett & Son Litho Townsville', on front 'J.P. Howard', Australian arms upper right, below 'On Demand pay the Bearer the Sum of ONE POUND Sterling. Winton, ....Payable at The Queensland National Bank, Ltd. Winton. Jonah Howard, Hotelkeeper, Boulia', 'ONE' in green across note within five circles, with oval purple stamp '... HOTEL BOULIA', impressed with Queensland One Penny duty stamp, green and black on white, (Not noted by Vort-Ronald). Four folds, stain remains of durex tape on back, otherwise good very fine and extremely rare if not unique.

Reading the date is difficult as the printed original note is 190-, but the 29 has more a 2 than a 3, consequently the date is more likely 1929 than 1939. Another rare 'shin-plaster' issue from Northern Queensland from the same town that issued the W.S. Weigh note in 1931. This note is closer in appearance to a bank note than other notes issued at this time.
