Description
Alfred Skinner, General Storekeeper, Wine & Spirits Merchant, Adavale, Queensland, one pound, currency note, dated June 1 1904, (190- printed), numbered No. A9859, signed Alfred Skinner, unwatermarked paper, value as Ã…â€Å‣1 in lower left corner, no imprint, on front 'The Queensland National Bank Limited, Clarleville, On demand please to pay the Bearer ONE POUND Sterling, Adavale June 1 1904', Australian Arms in oval with elaborate pattern in ovals on each side, in background in large letters in two lines across 'ALFRED SKINNER ADAVALE', blue pencil initials and date 8/6/04 on back, blue and black on white. Light stain near edge, otherwise extremely fine and rare.
This note by a General Storekeeper and alcohol merchant is part of a similar series by the same printer (see example of James Henry Kennedy) and is typical of this group from remote areas issued towards the latter part of the last century and early this century. The issuers provided a service and it could be used as currency in the local area until cashed at the bank's branch at Charleville. They would then presumably be redeemed by the issuer.
