Description
Commercial Bank of Sydney, one pound, issued at Sydney, Dec 1, 1869 (?), (18 printed), No. 863476, hand signed by Manager and clerk (entered), printed on unwatermarked paper, with imprint on centre of bottom, 'Perkins Bacon & Co, London, Patent Hardened Steel Plate', with vignettes of females seated in top corners and in centre, all within rectangular ornate spiral border, back with large 1 within ovals surrounded by a border of circles and ovals with various patterns, black on white, (Vort-Ronald, p.142-145 on bank, This note illustrated as Fig.151, Tomlinson p.58 illustrates one pound note of type). Folds and creases, with some aging tone, otherwise nearly fine, very rare and one of the earliest known notes of this bank.
This issue of the Commercial Bank of Sydney (1834-1982, merging to form the NAB in 1982), is of most interest, particularly as few one pound notes seem to have survived. Five pound notes are more readily available as 35 notes were present in the 1971 'New England Hoard'.
