THRACE, Kingdom of, Lysimachos, (323-281 B.C.), gold stater, (8.476 grams), Kalchedon mint, posthumous issue c.215-210 B.C., obv. diademed head of Alexander the Great to right, wearing horn of Ammon, rev. Athena enthroned to left, holding Nike and resting left arm on shield, transverse spear resting against right side to right, to right **BASILEWS, to left *LUSIMACOU, B under arm, bull butting left in exergue, (cf.S.6813, Marinescu issue 37; Seyrig, Monnaies pl. 25, 25 var. [F to inner left]; MÃ…ller 358 var. [same]; SNG Stockholm 835 var. [same; same obv. die]). Extremely fine, a few minor die breaks on obverse, slight die shift on reverse and extremely rare, only one example noted by Marinescu (and that in the BM).

The occasion for this issue was probably some special event of the Bouphonia, such as those celebrated at Athens, Magnesia, and Kios, when the sacrificial bull of Zeus Poleias was encouraged to freely bend down and 'offer' itself for sacrifice.
