Commencement of Volunteer Movement, in Australia, 1856, in bronze (33mm) by J.Hogarth (C.1856/1) struck by Royal Mint, Sydney, obverse diademed head of Queen Victoria left with legend 'Victoria Dei Gratia Regina', reverse, seated Britannia holding wreath and trident, ships, hill and lighthouse in background with legend 'Aut Bello Victoria Aut Pace', 1856 in exergue. Very fine and of utmost rarity with only twelve struck in bronze.
As an indicator of its rarity, Dr John Chapman did not have an example of this medal in his life-time collection auctioned by Noble Numismatics, Sale 88B. This medal was ordered by General Edward Macarthur, elder brother of Sir William.
