Amalgamated Mine Managers Association of Australasia, handcrafted medal in gold (18ct, 42.3gms, 32mm) with decorative rope mount, by J.M.Wendt, inscribed on reverse 'Presented to Z.Lane Esq / Founder of / Barrier Branch / of the / Amalgamated Mine Managers Asson. / of / Australasia / As a Mark of Esteem / by the Members of that / Branch / on the Occasion of / his leaving Broken Hill 13 Oct 1893'. Extremely fine and extremely rare.

Zebina Lane (1829-1906) a noted Canadian mining engineer as was his son, also named Zebina. Lane senior was the manager of the Lord Nelson mine at St Arnaud in 1887. Initially opposed by miners and owners he showed the efficiency of his methods by reviving the rundown mine turning in a profit until the 1890s. Operating at Broken Hill from 1893 he helped solve the problem of treating sulphide ores. He became Mayor of Broken Hill, later he managed a mine at Kalgoorlie which made him a fortune.
