Sale 88 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes, Dr John Chapman Collection
Description
Burke & Wills, 1861, in bronze (42mm) by E.A. Sc T.S.M. at base (C.1861/1 variant). Nearly very fine.
This piece was made using rusted dies to produce uniface strikes of the obverse and reverse, then sweat them together (note dividing solder line). Careful measurements show that the design impression is slightly larger than the medal in white metal. This would confirm that the medals in white metal were cast as the metal would contract on cooling. E.A.Altmann had not established his business at that time and therefore had not press of his own.
