Ireland. Reward of Merit, Royal Irish Constabulary Medal (second type). Constable Bertie S.Daniels 70743 1920 engraved on reverse. Very fine and rare.
Bertie S Daniels. Born London, 19Jun1899. Recommended for medal by Major D.I.Flemming, 13Jul1920 for his part defending Fenit Police Station which was attacked on 01Jun1920. Extract from the Cork Examiner dated 3 June 1920 'Kerry Barrack Burned. Two Hours Siege. Traloe, Wednesday. - Fenit Police Barrack, eight miles from Tralee was destroyed by fire by a large party of raiders this morning. Sergeant Murphy and seven constables were stationed in the barracks. At 2 o'clock the raiders entered the adjoining housed of Captain O'Mahony and Mrs Lynch and put out the occupants. They then made a large opening in Captain O'Mahony's roof, poured petrol on the barracks roof and opened fire. The police replied and a fierce battle ensued , lasting two hours, by which time the barracks and adjoining houses were enveloped in flames...' Together with photocopies of newspaper articles.
