Italy, Bruttium, Caulonia, silver third stater, 460-450 B.C. (Kraay chronology), (2.672 grams), obv. Apollo naked walking to left, before him a stag standing to left, looking back, traces of KAV behind, rev. stag standing to right, before a sapling growing, KAV retrograde above, (cf.S.464, SNG Cop. 1717 [same dies], SNG Lockett 591 [This Coin], Noe 213e [This Coin], Weber 991 [This Coin]). Toned, good very fine and very rare.
Ex Richard Cyril Lockett Collection, Auction Sale Glendining's London, October 25, 1955 (lot 476) and previously from the Sir Hermann Weber Collection No. 991 who acquired it from W.S. Lincoln (London dealer) in 1889. Noe notes that this rare denomination in this period comes from only eleven sets of dies and for forty three examples. This die combination is known for six examples including this coin and most of these known are in public collections.
