Italy, Lucania, Metapontum, (c.400-350 B.C.), silver nomos, stater or didrachm, (7.892 grams), obv. female head of Demeter to left wearing an ear-ring and necklace, **L* under chin, dotted border, rev. corn ear, to left META on a raised cartouche downwards, [- H P to right upwards above the leaf on right, (cf.S.409, Noe 527 [p.87 same dies], BMC 127, SNG ANS 394 [same dies], SNG Cop.1206, [same dies], SNG Ash.721, Hunterian 12-13 [same dies]). Fine toning, slightly off centred, extremely fine and a rare type.
