Description
Macedon, Kingdom of, Philip III, (323-315 B.C), but an issue in the name of Lysimachus, (king 323-281 B.C.), AE 18, (6.055 grams), Macedonian issue, Amphipolis mint, issued c.320-315 B..C., obv. laureate head of Apollo to right, rev. horseman to right, above **FILIPPOU* below **LU* and forepart of a lion, (S.-, Price P4, BMC P4, Thompson 2 [ p.168, Essays Robinson, Thompson - The Mints of Lysimachus]). Good fine and rare.
A rare an important ambiguous issue with clear references to both Philip and Lysimachus. Thompson, who noted the issue as being modelled on the money of Philip II, attributed the issue to Lysimachia mint between 306/5-301/0 B.C. whereas Price suggested a different mint an issue of Philip III and an earlier date (as noted above).
