Lot 1031 Sale 44 Australian Singles

George Medal (GVIR) L.A.C. Robert M. Stewart R.A.AF. Engraved. Edgeknock and some pitting on obverse, otherwise nearly very fine. GM L.G. 31 Oct 52. Together with: Newspaper cutting relating to incident, and copy of official citation. In case of issue. Leading Airoraftman Robert Mansfield STEWART serving with No 2 Airfield Construction Squadron, Royal Australin Air Force, Cocos Islands was the second of a number of airmen who went to the assistance of five visiting English servicemen, who were in extreme danger of being drowned when they were swept off a dangerous reef into the open sea, at West Island, on the 6th Apirl, 1952. Despite warnings of the treacherous nature of the surf, this airman without thought for his own personal safety, swam over the reef towards the servicemen in difficulties. With coolness he advised on Englishman of the best manner in which to regain the reef and actually dived under one man pushing him ont the crest of a wave. The dive under water in the sea-ward side of the reef with breakers up to fifteen feet high with terrific back surge of water and the danger of being sucked under the shelf of the reef, was a deed of great heroism. On satisfying himself that one Englishman had been swept to safety on the reef, L.A.C. STEWART then endeavoured to save the life of a fellow airman in the huge sea, but unfortunately, without success. STEWRT becoming exhausted swam further out sea where he saw three other men in difficulties. Remembering a gap in the surf, he decided to lead the others there, although it entailed a three mile swim. While fully aware that they were in shark infested waters, this airman by his cheerfulness and advice was able to keep up the morale of the others and lead them to safety.During this period, one member sustained cramp of the foot which was successfully treated by L.A.C. STEWART whilst in the water L.A.C. STEWART displayed outstanding qualities of courage, determination, skill and stamina. By his efforts it is considered that this airman saved the lives of at least four men and his performance was one of outstanding bravery.
