Benjamin George Harpur Brown was born 1 October 1845 at Dublin. He arrived in Victoria in 1858 and later began working as a clerk for Judge Billing. For several years he was a member of the Southern Rifles, advanced to the rank of Sergeant and later was commissioned as a Captain in the Emerald Artillery. A favourite with both officers and men he remained with unit until it was disbanded. In 1888 he was elected a Councillor for the South Yarra Ward of Prahran.
