Description

J.P. Howard, Hotelkeeper, Boulia, Queensland, issued at Winton, uniface one pound specimen currency note mounted on card, not dated with only printed 19, (190- printed), numbered A650, unsigned, value as '£ ONE' in upper left and lower right corners, on front 'J.P. Howard', Australian arms upper right, below 'On Demand pay the Bearer the Sum of ONE POUND Sterling. Winton, ....Payable at The Queensland National Bank, Ltd. Winton. (Jonah Howard), Hotelkeeper, Boulia', 'ONE' in green across note within five circles, (type illustrated Vort Ronald..Shinplaster.. p.55). Corner clipped, minor tears but mounted on board, otherwise nearly very fine and extremely rare if not unique for a specimen.

Reading the date is difficult as the printed original note is 19-, but the evidence suggests a date of about 1939. Another rare "shin-plaster" issue from Northern Queensland from the same town that issued the W.S. Weigh note in 1931. This note is closer in appearance to a bank note than other notes issued at this time.
