DENARIUS ROME MINT (STRUCK C. 46-45 B.C.) Obv. Diademed head of Venus or Pietas right, wreathed with oak, LII behind Rev. CAESAR below trophy of Gallic arms, axe surmounted by an animal's head on right (Craw.452/2;Syd.1009;Sear 354). Struck slightly off the flan, very fine.
The LII may indicate Caesar's age (52) when the coins were struck; the series refers to the 9 years struggle in Gaul which culminated in the capture of Vercingetorix, the celebrated chieftain of the Arverni.
