Description

Egypt, Kingdom of, Ptolemy II, (285-246 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.08 grams), Alexandria mint, issued 284-3 B.C., obv. head of Ptolemy I to right wearing aegis, rev. eagle to left with closed wings, standing on thunderbolt, in front P over **PAR* monogram, around **BASILEWS PTOLEMAIOU*, another (13.86 grams), (cf.S.7773, Sv. 255, SNG Cop 70 [Ptolemy I]). Both with punch or bankers marks, light surface scratches or graffito on the reverse, otherwise very good - fine. (2)

The Gulnar II publication, Le Tresor de Meydancikkale, places these coins during the first few years of the reign of Ptolemy II, SNG Copenhagen prefers to place them in the reign of Ptolemy I. The coins in this lot are very similar to the examples of this type from that hoard since they almost all have similar countermarks and grafiti.
