Thrace, Pautalia, Faustina Junior, wife of Marcus Aurelius, (d.A.D. 175), AE 22, (6.094 grams), obv. Faustina draped bust to right, around **FA*VCTEINA [CEBAC]TH, rev. Athena seated to left, resting on spear, holding Nike with wreath in hand, around [OV]**LPIA PA*V TA**LIA*C, (S.-, cf.Ruzicka 105 (type with shield), cf.SNG Evelpidis 988 [Pl.XXVII, type with shield], cf.SNG Cop. 693 (type with shield), cf.Mion. Sup.II, No.1002 [p.372]). Some legend weakness, otherwise nearly very fine and a very rare variant.

Ex Lord Grantley Collection with ticket (incorrectly described as Anchialus), from A.H. Baldwin & Sons, and from Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1662 part) for the benefit of the Classical Department of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
