Description
William I, (1066-1087), silver penny, PAXS type, Uncertain mint, issued 1083-1086, obv. crowned diademed bust facing with sceptre, rev. cross pattee in each angle, an annulet in each corner with one letter of the word PAXS, around +GPRINCF..ON NC, (S.1257, N.848, Br.VIII). Very fine.
Ex H.P. Whittle Collection. The legend or reading of the reverse is largely conjectural and close comparison to the BMC catalogue and other illustrations does not help the interpretation of the moneyer and mint.
