Macrinus, (A.D. 217-218), AE dupondius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 217, (11.238, grams), obv. radiate draped and cuirassed bust of Macrinus to right, around IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, rev. around VOTA PVBL P M TR P, SC across field, Fides standing to left holding standard in each hand and a standard at each side, (S.-, RIC 128, cf.C.1465, from the same dies [not as fine] as the RIC published example in the Vierordt Sale of 1923 [lot 1967]). Full flan, well struck with a deep green patination, well centred and extremely fine, a rare type and very rare in this condition and probably the finest example extant.
Ex Stacks New York, April 8, 1950 and the Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1716 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with his ticket.
