Description

Sicily, Syracuse, Timoleon, (344-336 B.C.), AE litra, (34.67 grams), obv. **[SURA] above, head of Athena to left wearing Corinthian helmet bound with olive wreath, rev. starfish between two dolphins, (S.1189, BMC 287, SNG ANS 454-469). Uneven flan with ethnic off the flan, otherwise attractive nearly very fine.

SNG ANS attribute this coinage to the beginnings of the fourth century B.C. and indicate that the denomination is a drachm (not a litra). It is one of the largest coins struck in Sicily. The attribution above is the traditional one based on Sear, 'Greek Coins and their values'.
