Sale 64 · Important Australian Coins & Banknotes, Ancient, World Coins & War Medals, The W.J.Noble Collection of Communion Tokens

Description

Port Phillip, Kangaroo Office pattern issue fourpence in copper of (1853) by W.J. Taylor, London, from different dies to other known examples, (cf.A.781, Heyde R7). Attractive light brown patina, minor discolouration on parts of reverse, otherwise good extremely fine/extremely fine and extremely rare.

Taylor used various dies for his token gold, silver and bronze coinage, all known fourpences (Spink Australia sale 18) and Andrews illustration of A.781 seem to come from a common pair of dies. This piece comes from another pair of dies apparently unpublished.
