Description
The Hamilton Hume Conveyance document with seals etc., dated 30th June 1858, between Hamiliton Hume of Cooma and Allan Campbell esq. of Yass as an indenture on vellum, for four hundred pounds and release from Elizabeth Hume for two hundred pounds the land at Yass with a total of nine hundred and fifty acres. The document is signed by Hamilton Hume twice and Elizabeth Hume once. Fine and a rare document of Australiana for such a significant explorer.
Hamilton Hume (1797-1873) explorer was born near Parramatta NSW, who from the early age of 17 started various explorations, including a trip to the Berrima area. He explored over the next two years and finally penetrated further to Bungonia. At the request of Gov. Macquarie in 1818 he with others discovered Lake Bathurst and the Goulburn plains. Next year, he with Oxley went to Jervis Bay and returned overland. Several years later he discovered the Yass plains and in 1822 reached the Clyde river penetrating overland to Braidwood with Alexander Berry. It was Berry who brought together Hume and Captain W.Hovell to perform their greatest feat of exploration by the journey in 1824-1825 to Port Phillip and back. Soon after his return he married Elizabeth daughter of John Hannah Dight of Richmond. He carried out various other explorations mostly at the request of the Government into the interior including the Sturt's voyage to the Darling river. He decided due to poor health to settle on the Yass plains as the site of his home (Cooma) that was probably made in the early 1820's when the area was already being settled by squarters. He moved to the plains in 1829 receiving one grant of 1280 acres and another of 1920 acres and it was some of this property that is subject of the above document. He became a magistrate in Yass in 1860 and remained their until his death which took place in his home, Cooma Cottage at Yass on 19th April 1873. That original house now known as Cooma Cottage still stands on the land near Yass near the highway from Sydney to Melbourne. Allan Campbell the purchaser of the parcel of land in this document was a surgeon in Yass.
