Julius Caesar, (c.46 B.C.), silver denarius, uncertain mint, (3.83 grams), obv. Ceres head to right, around COS TERT DICT ITER, rev. simpulum, sprinkler, capis and lituus, AVGVR above, M to right, PONT MAX below, (S.356 [£150], Cr.467/1b, Syd.1024, C. Julius Caesar 4 [£120]). Chip out of edge, otherwise nearly extremely fine and very scarce.
Ex Christie's London, 7 May 1980 (lot 9 part). The issue was probably struck to pay his successful legions after the battle of Thapsus 6 April B.C. 46. The head of Ceres is emblematic of Africa.
