The Social War, the coinage of the Marsic Confederation, (c.90-88 B.C.), anonymous issue, silver denarius, Corfinium mint, issued 90 B.C., (3.76 grams), obv. laureate head of Italia to left, within dotted border, rev. oath-taking scene, youth kneeling at the foot of a standard, holding sacrificial pig, amidst a group of eight soldiers holding drawn swords, numeral IIIIX in exergue, (S.250 [£750], Syd.629, BMC 46, Alberto Campana 'La Monetazione Degli Insorti Italici Durante La Guerra Sociale [91-87 a.C), Series 3a, No.25 [obv.D 20, rev. R 19, these dies]). Even dark patina, flaw on cheek, otherwise very fine and very rare.
Ex. Dr. John Sawhill Collection and James Madison University Collection, Stack's New York, March 15, 1979 (lot 379). Only 8 examples with this numeral are known. The entire issue of this type comes from only 23 obverse dies, of which Campana records 84 known examples to exist.
