M. Caecilius, Q.f. Q.n. Metellus, (127 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.78 grams), obv. Roma helmeted head right, * below chin, ROMA upwards behind, rev. Macedonian shield on which is an elephant's head, all within wreath, M.METELLVS Q.F. around, (S.213 [£75], Cr.263/1a, Syd.480). Even grey patina, good very fine and scarce.
Ex. Duke of Northumberland Collection, Sotheby's London, November 4, 1982 (lot 253 part). Smyth III/29. Only 44 obverse dies was used for this coinage according to Crawford.
