Description

Syria, Seleucis & Pieria, Antiochia ad Orontem (Antioch), Nero (A.D. 54-68), silver tetradrachm, (15.010 grams), obv. laureate head to right of Nero, wearing aegis, **NERWN [KAISAROS SE]BASTOU*, rev. **ETOUS [AIR Q]* (year 111 of Caesarean era = A.D. 61-2), eagle standing to right, on thunderbolt, wings spread, palm branch and dot in front (cf.S.618, BMC 195-6, Wruck 42). Slightly off-centred on the obverse and reverse, very fine portrait of Nero, otherwise good fine and rare.

Antioch at this time was striking in good silver with a high standard of portraiture. This example provides an interesting portrait of Nero.
