Description

George IV, uniface crown, in Barton's metal, 1825, bare head left, (cf.S.3806; ESC.256). Only three or four examples known of regular type and unique as a uniface example, nearly FDC.

Barton's metal is a copper sheet on to which is rolled and pressed a thin sheet of gold, it is a different process to gilding and requires more gold. The copper core shows on the edge and sometimes some gold presses a little over the edge as in this coin above.
