The River Don Trading Coy Limited, River Don, Tasmania, twenty five shillings, currency note, dated Nov 30th 1887 (18 printed) number No.3822 C, no watermark, circular value tablets in upper corners, vignettes of industrial and farming scene. Imprint of Aitkenhead & Button is still partially visible on bottom right border. Stating on front 'On Demand. please pay Bearer the sum of TWENTY FIVE SHILLINGS Stg. Manager of Van Diemen's Land Launceston. Signed William Shaw, Secretary and John Henry Managing Director. Impressed with Tasmanian duty stamp, also stamped with oval bank stamp of the Commercial Bank of Australasia red on white. Back of note with blue in markings. This note is significant in that at the bottom right margin, the printers name 'AITKENHEAD AND BUTTON' is partly visible. Previously this issue has been attributed to Troedle & Co Melbourne, as the design was similar to Boatwrites notes. Not all denominations of the River Don notes carry this printers imprint. Supporting evidence of the printers imprint of H.Button is found on specimen notes of the thirty shilling denomination only. Some pinholes, folds, edge tears, otherwise very good and very rare.
