Description
Another, exactly as the previous except a trial struck on a broad copper flan with raised rims (2.5mm wide)(37.5mm) (die III early stage ie. no die breaks on obverse) (V. Type 9 but this trial not listed). Good very fine and excessivly rare.
Ex Spink Australia Sale (lot 1446) (originally discovered in Sydney by Martin Daniel circa 1960). One other in commerce was only in fair condition (Baldwin Sale 6 lot 840). This type being given two fractional values is one of the most fascinating of colonial world tokens produced by a canny scot to replace cowrie shells at the MacGregor Laird trading factories in the Niger River basin, this 1/8th penny would have been rated at 11 cowrie shells per token (approx.)
