Sale 61 · Important Australian & World Coins, Banknotes & Military Medals, The W.J.Noble Collection of British Tickets, Passes & Tokens

Description

British Guiana, Trade & Navigation/ Pure Copper Preferable to Paper, one stiver, 1838, edge plain, another edge engrailed but without any graining (Lyall 111, Pr 60, the edge variety not listed). Nearly very fine; good very fine (2).

Acquired in the 1960's. This issue is thought to have been made by Mr Balgarnie, a liquor and dry goods merchant. It is modelled in anymous copper tokens that proved popular in Canada. The issue was large and over a period during the 1840's Messrs Baldwin of London have a large parcel of this token some with original colour suggesting that this issue may have been remaindered after a fire destroyed the premises of Messrs Balgarnie in Water St, Georgetown in 1872.
