Madras Presidency, British Style Coinage system, Gold mohur or ashrafi, issued 1819, struck at Madras mint, (11.63 grams), obv. EIC arms with suporters, around ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY, rev. in Persian 'Ashrafi (or Mohur) of the Honourable English Company', (Pr. 241, KM. 421). Extremely fine, scarce.
Ex. Wreck of the 'Fame', and Glendining's June 16, 1971 (lot 132) and Noble Numismatics sale 48 (lot 2027). $$ The issue was 1,117,800. The 'Fame' was an English Sailing ship of 629 tons, which was driven onto the rocks at Sea Point, Table Bay, Cape Town, on the 14th June 1822. This wreck were recovered in October 1965.
