Description
Sicily, Syracuse, (485-480 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.28 grams), obv. slow quadriga driven to right by male charioteer, Nike flying right crowning horses, rev. **SUPAKO S IO N around to right, head of Artemis-Arethusa to right, hair waved and turned up behind under diadem of beads, four dolphins around, (cf.S.913, Boehringer 117 [obv.53/rev.42 same dies], Randazzo Hoard No.271 [This Coin]). Attractive even grey tone, well centred, very fine and a rare combination of dies.
Ex. Randazzo Hoard (1980), published as ANS Num. Studies No.18 (see a copy of this publication is in the Numismatic Literature section). Boehringer note 7 specimens from these dies, four in private collections. This is the only coin from the Randazzo hoard from these dies. Probably less than 10 examples survive from these dies today. See comment on the Rhegium tetradrachm from this same hoard in this sale and the footnote on the hoard in the numismatic literature section.
