Description

Augustus, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), silver cistophorus, Ephesus mint, issued 28-27 B.C., (10.04 grams), obv. laureate head of Octavian to right, around IMP CAESAR DIVI F COS VI LIBERTATIS [P R VINDEX], rev. PAX in field to left, Pax standing half left on parazonium or torch, right hand holding caduceus, in field to right a snake emerging from cista mystica, all within laurel wreath, (S.-, RIC 476, C.218, BMC 691). Very good / fine and scarce.

Ex. Glendining's London, February 18, 1980 (lot 184 part). This issue commemorates the general peace that was proclaimed on the return to Rome in 29 B.C.
