Description

Sultans of Bengal, (House of Raja Ganesh), Jalul-ud-din Muhammad Shah, (A.H. 818-836, A.D. 1415-1432), gold tanka, (10.8 grams), Chatgon mint, Nasir al Islam type, dated A.H. 834 = A.D. 1430-1, (cf.IMC 110 [p.163 silver tanka issue], Rajgor 264 [p.24 silver tanka issue]). Extremely fine and extremely rare the type apparently unpublished.

The rare silver tanka is known from this mint for this year and is dated, the previously unknown gold tanka of this same mint is also dated the same year 834 (reading at the 3 0'clock position). It was this ruler Jalul-ud-din Muhammad Shah with the devout zeal of a convert, revived the time-honoured Kalima which had not been engraved on Bengal coins for two centuries. The obverse area has the Kalima in Tughra characters and entirely fills this area with this Islamic profession of faith.
