Description
Matthew Boulton's Bronze medal mule with currency penny, c.1810-1830, bronzed proof-like medal in copper, by Soho mint, not signed, 34mm, (18.2 grams), obv. bust of Boulton to right, 1792, rev. currency penny Britannia to left by Kuchler, (Pollard -, Eimer -, BHM 663 (obverse die only), Fearon -, P. [Peck] KP 32 [reverse die], who notes the existence of this piece on p.369). Red-brown patina, FDC, probably unique.
Ex. A.H. Baldwin & Sons, London, 1996. The obverse die has many die cracks and is noted by Brown as excessively rare. Other medals issues using this reverse die are muled with an obverse of a 1830 visit to Soho of Princess Victoria, suggesting that the above Boulton mule using this reverse die was probably a concoction made about the same time.
