Frederick Keith Matthew, 1/4th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (T.F.). Twice recognised for gallantry and leadership during the First World War. Recommended for a Mention in Dispatches (9 October 1916) for “great ability and devotion to duty” during the heavy fighting at Guillemont (August 1916) and Delville Wood (September 1916), where he assumed command under severe battlefield conditions. Later recommended for the Military Cross (29 September 1917) for consistent distinguished service, noted for energy, discipline, and coolness in action, particularly during the successful defeat of an attempted enemy raid north-east of Ypres (18/19 May 1917).
