Sale NZ1 · The Unique & Unparalleled Collection of New Zealand Historical Medals & Memorabilia (Part 1)

Description

N.Z.R. (New Zealand Railways), Member of Parliament Free Pass, c1880s, patu struck in gold (probably 15ct, tot wt 11.8g, 60x18mm), no maker (possibly by S.Kohn, Wellington), ring top suspension, three strand 9ct gold chain with fob clip attached for wear, obverse inscribed 'Eden'. Extremely fine and excessively rare.

For many years from the 1870s, Members of Parliament had the privilege of free travel on New Zealand Railways. They were given 'Passes' made of gold or silver, in the form of distinctively New Zealand motifs such as tiki, patu or kiwi. These passes were attached to the Members' fob chains so they could be easily shown to Railway officials. 'Eden' is an electorate in Auckland.

An unissued example is held in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Collection.
