Sale NZ1 · The Unique & Unparalleled Collection of New Zealand Historical Medals & Memorabilia (Part 1)

Description

K&S (Kirkcaldie & Stains), (Wellington), 1D check, uniface, in copper (25mm), incuse lettering, central hole (G.31a; TMR.p174). Very fine and rare.

Little is known about the issue. Roker suggests that the checks may have been used in the 1930s for the toilet facilities at the Kirkcaldie & Stains store, or possibly as staff discount tokens. The penny was possibly used as a lavatory token, although it is also feasible that both denominations were 'canteen' tokens used in the tearooms of the store from 1898.

Ex W.H.Lampard Collection, private purchase in 2011. With research.
