Private Traders Currency Note, George Shenton, one pound, Perth, Western Australia, November 1, 1865. No.439, signed by G Shenton and entered by Geo. Shenton Jnr. Green on yellow including National Bank of Australasia Ltd., bank stamps for branches Geraldton and Perth.(VR. Page 23, Fig.29 actual note). Some folds and three pinholes, otherwise good fine. The endorsement is dated 19th June 1868, proving these notes served as currency. Only a few circulating notes are known, this being the finest and extremely rare.

George Shenton was an important figure in early Western Australian history. He and his son George (later Sir George and first Mayor of Perth) (1842-1909) who joined with the father in 1858, had a business which became Perth's largest emporium. George Shenton Jnr. remained in public life, his Perth residence became the site of the University of Western Australia.
