Description
New Zealand Girls' Friendly Society, c1890s, struck in bronze (33x21mm), no maker, ring top suspender broken off. Good fine and rare.
The Girls' Friendly Society was started in New Zealand in 1883 by Lady Jervois. Initially its main aim was to provide support for girls immigrating to New Zealand. Society associates were to meet all ships and trains arriving in Wellington, welcome the girls, give them a cup of tea and find them a place to board until they were settled. Other activities included factory visits and instruction. Eventually other branches were started and buildings purchased to provide hostel accommodation for members.
