Labour Day Demonstration, Wellington, N.Z., 1915, fob medal, hand engraved in gold (9ct, 17.3g, 30mm), by G.T.W. (G.T.White, Wellington), ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'First Prize/Shearing Competition/Machine/Won By/J.Leyland/Labour Day/Demonstration/Wellington, NZ/1915'. Very fine.

"LABOUR DAY SPORTS, SATURDAY'S GATHERING AT NEWTOWN PARK
The Labour Day Demonstration this year has been somewhat of a failure, principally on account of the adverse weather conditions. On 25th October (Labour Day), rain caused a postponement of the sports, and on Saturday, when the gathering was held at Newtown Park, the meteorological conditions were little better. This was very disappointing to a most energetic committee, which had worked hard under the secretary (Mr.L.M.A.Rearden) an able organiser. Although it did not rain, the sky was overcast, and a strong nor'wester - quite typical of Wellington at this time of the year - made matters very unpleasant. Under the circumstances a poor attendance of the public was only to be expected. The few who attended had a real good time, particularly the children, who are always well catered for at the Labour Sports. Toys were given away freely, and there were lollie scrambles and various other attractions bound to please the small child. A very lengthy sports programme had been arranged for boys and girls, men and women, and there were some keen contests. The Highland dancing also created considerable interest. Two bands were present, the Waterside Workers and the Pipe Band. Among those present during the afternoon were Sir Joseph and Lady Ward and the Mayor (Mr.J.P.Luke).

SHEARING COMPETITION
Special interest was taken in the sheep-shearing contest, which resulted :- Machine-shearing - Leyland 1st for all-round work and for speed, Blakeley 2, and Townsend 3.
Blade-shearing - King 1, McLachlan 2, Townsend 3."
