Pair: South Africa Medal 1877-79, - clasp - 1879; Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse) - five clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902.Cpl J.H.Mitten. Baker's Horse. on first medal, 3157 Tpr J.H.Mitten. 3rd N.S.W.I.B. on second medal. Both medals impressed. Hairlines, otherwise good very fine - nearly extremely fine.
Ex I.S.Wright, Ballarat. ^Joseph (John) Henry Mitten, served in Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 in Wood's Column and in battle of Hlobane with heavy casualties; joined Rhodesia Regt on 28Aug1899 before outbreak of Boer War as No.214 aged 39, cook, English; present at Relief of Mafeking but missed Siege at Eland's River having been discharged on 30Apr1900 as Medically Unfit; joined A Sqn 1st Brabant's Horse 11Jul1900 as A/Sgt No.503 aged 40, cook, with previous experience in Natal Mounted Police; Disch.27Mar1901; joined Scott's Railway Guards on 11Apr1901 as Trooper No.32965, aged 43, shoe maker; Discharged for misconduct but no details available; joined Damant's Horse (later Rimmington's Guides) 27Jun1901 as Trooper No.34955, aged 47, cook; Disch.28Dec1901 time expired; joined 3 NSW Imperial Bushman January 1902 as Trooper No.3157 (this unit was formed in South Africa); Disch.12Jun1902; reported as RTA arriving in Sydney, NSW 03Jun1902.^With extensive research.
