Description
Thailand, Thai Kingdoms, (17th-19th centuries), debased silver tok chiangmai (pig mouth or oyster money), (63.18g), three circular countermarks on either side of the aperture, blackened top and yellowish-brown underside (cf Mitch 2800). Very fine as cast.
Ex Alan McRae Collection with his display ticket.^^The discolouration on the underside is traditionally attributed to the addition of egg yolk and chicken blood to the mould before casting. Recent work suggests the application of gold leaf may instead have achieved this finish.
