Description

Netherlands, Dutch Republic, City of Deventer, silver rider or ducaton, 1666, (KM.62.1, Dav 4944), sea salvage from the wreck of the Merenstejin, recovered April 1978. Salt water damage, toning, very good.

Ex Alan McRae Collection with his display ticket and a COA from the salvors.^^The VOC ship Merensteijin was sailing for Batavia with a consignment of silver specie. Much of the crew was suffering from scurvy, and with dwindling water supplies, the ship was forced to shore to restock. Whilst attempting to enter Saldanha Bay during the night of the 2nd April 1702, it ran aground and broke up within the hour. Only 99 members of the crew survived by swimming to Jutten Island, where the Wezel and Amij were able to rescue them.
