Bendigo St Andrews Society, 3rd Annual Gathering, (1889), in silver (51.5mm), features plain silver disc with an ornate floral design frame, with loop mount, inscribed on obverse, "Bendigo St. Andrews Society/3rd Annual/Gathering", and inscribed on the reverse, "1st Prize/Heavy Weight/Handicap Race/Awarded To/Mr. J.Madox/28th Decr. 1889, hallmarked "JM." (J.Melrose). Good very fine.

Little is known of the recipient. The maker, John Melrose, was a famous Edinburgh born jeweller and goldsmith who immigrated to Victoria in the 1850's. Due to his skills, he became a dental mechanic, working on many mechanical dentistry made out of gold. It is said that he performed under chloroform - his employer, the dentist Mr Morrison, was one of the first patients to inhale chloroform for this purpose.
