Macedon, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), gold stater, (8.54 g), Sardes Mint, issued under Menander or Kleitos, c.322-319/8 B.C., obv. head of Athena to right in crested Corinthian helmet, hair flowing and griffin on helmet, rev. Nike standing to left, holding wreath in outstretched hand, in left field a monogram, below wing an akrostolion, to right **ALEXANDPOU*, (cf.S.6702, Price 2592 var [serpent on helmet], ADM I Series XIII var. (same), Delorme & Collin du Bocage [iNumis], 11 December 2009, lot 7 (same obv. die). Some surface roughness, very fine and very rare, an unpublished variety.
