Description

Germany-Poland, Lodz Ghetto, 1943, five marks in aluminium and magnesium, ten marks in aluminium (2), magnesium, issued by Jewish Elders, [Der Alteste Der Juden], (Campbell 4752a and b, 4753 a & b, Stahl, No.51, [p.39, text p.29-43]). Very fine. (5)

These coins were allegedly produced by the personal intervention of the Nazi Commander of the Ghetto, Hans Biebow, who was an avid stamp and coin collector. The name Lodz does not appear on the issue but the new name of the city Litzmanstadt, following Hitler's order to name the city in memory of the German general Litzman, who died in World war I near Lodz.
