There was a big gathering at the Highland Society's sports day at the Sydney Showground on Saturday 1 January 1927. The Pibroch event, a form of music for the Scottish bagpipes, was won by W.Hutchison and he also came second in the Junior Piping Competition (under 20 years). Then on Wednesday 1 January 1930 at the Highland Society's gathering at the Sydney Royal Agricultural Society's showground he was a member of the pipe band of the Highland Society of NSW that won the championship and the Dewar Trophy.
