Sale 138 · Important Australian, British, World, and Ancient Coins, Banknotes, and Medals

Description

New Zealand Hei Tiki badge, in voided gold (9ct; 9.35g; 18x30mm), by A.Kohn Ltd, pin-back, reverse inscribed, 'Decima Norman/Auckland N.Z. Tour/1939'. Very fine.

Decima Norman won five athletic gold medals at the 1938 Empire Games, thus becoming Australia's first real 'Golden Girl' with a record that was not broken until Suzie O'Neill won six gold medals in the pool at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In March 1939 she made a tour to New Zealand and raced the New Zealand champion Doreen Lumley. The Kiwi managed to win by a matter of inches over 100 yards with both equalling the world record but only Lumley's time was ratified. Norman's Olympics aspirations were dashed when the 1940 Olympics were cancelled due to World War II.
