Lot 2239

Sale 53 · Important Australian Coins & Banknotes

Description

Palestine, Judaea, Mattathias Antigonus, (40-37 B.C.), copper multiple (four) prutah, (7.79 grams), obv. ivy wreath tied at top with inscription, BACI**LEW*C (retrograde) **G*ANTO rev. single cornucopiae with Paleo-Hebrew script around, (S.6104, H.482 variant [36], AJC V9). Even dark patina, with error reading of Greek inscription, off centred on reverse, otherwise nearly very fine and a very rare variant.

Coins of this Jewish ruler are usually poorly preserved and rarely have a legible legend, this one being much more interesting because of the retrograde legend.
